Philippine Red Cross Million Volunteer Run for Humanity on February 10, 2013
Last 04 December 2011, we celebrated the International Year of Volunteers by holding the first Million Volunteer Run. The run was staged simultaneously in 78 cities of the Philippines with a total of over 400,000 participating runners. With the incredible impact it has created in the recruitment of volunteers for the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), we have now declared it an annual event.
The number of natural disasters in the Philippines surged 50% last year, making the Philippines the world's most disaster-hit country in 2011. The two most destructive tropical cyclones in 2011 were tropical storms Sendong and Pedring. According to the Citizens' Disaster Response Center (CDRC), at least 15.3 million people were displaced, causing agriculture and infrastructure damages of Php 26 billion. The formula to alleviate human suffering in this horrifying buffet of disasters is the mobilization of millions of Red Cross volunteers supported by logistics and robust technological capabilities. Thus, the PRC has organized the Red Cross 143 wherein 44 volunteers (1 leader and 43 members) in every community are trained to reduce the risks of disasters, enabling them to respond accordingly to any catastrophic event that will strike the Philippines.
We know that you share our vision of providing timely and efficient humanitarian services to the most vulnerable. We want to have Red Cross first aiders, blood donors, and health and welfare volunteers in every home, school, workplace, and community in every corner of the Philippines. Attached herewith for your reference is the MVR presentation. By becoming our partner in this project, you empower our nation's most vulnerable against the debilitating effects of disasters.
Three easy ways to register:
Registration Fees :
- PhP 100.00 for students
- PhP 200.00 for non-students
- PhP 500.00 for business executives
The Philippines will make an international declaration that we are humanitarians. Join us in stopping the cycle of devastation. On Feb 10, we will be running to create a culture of volunteerism in the Philippines that will define the Filipino nation before the whole world.

Assuming that the mininum wage rate is P255, how much is the overtime rate per hour if you are working 12 hours a day in a Hospital? ---- Wake up Nurses
On ordinary day
On an ordinary day, the overtime rate per hour is determined as follows:
First, compute the hourly rate of the employee:
Regular hourly rate = Minumum wage rate ÷ 8 hours
= P255 ÷ 8 hours = P31.875 per hour
Now to determine overtime rate per hour:
Overtime rate = Regular hourly rate + 25% of Regular hourly rate
Overtime rate = P31.875 + (25% of P31.25) = P31.875 x 1.25 = P39.84375 per hour On rest day and special day
Compute the hour rate of the employee on a rest day or special day:
Hourly rate = 130% of Regular hourly rate
= P31.875 x 1.30 = P41.4375 per hour (Note: The hourly rate on rest day and special day is 130% of the regular rate.)
To determine overtime rate per hour:
Overtime rate = Hourly rate on rest day + 30% Hourly rate on rest day
= P41.4375 + (30% of P41.4375) = P41.4375 x 1.30 = P53.86875 per hour On rest day which falls on a special day
Compute the hourly rate of the employee on a rest day which falls on a special day:
Hourly rate = 150% of Regular hourly rate
= P31.875 x 1.50 = P47.8125 per hour
To determine overtime rate per hour:
Overtime rate = Hourly rate + 30% of Hourly rate
= P47.8125 + (30% of P47.8125) = P47.8125 x 1.30 = P62.15625 per hour On a regular holiday
Compute the hourly rate on regular holiday:
Hourly rate = 200% of Regular hourly rate
= P31.875 x 2 = P63.75 per hour
To determine overtime rate per hour:
Overtime rate = Hourly rate + 30% of Hourly rate
= P63.75 + (30% of P63.75) = P63.75 x 1.30 = P82.875 per hour On a rest day which falls on a regular holiday
Compute the hourly rate:
Hourly rate = 260% of Regular hourly rate
= P31.875 x 2.60 = P82.875 per hour
To determine overtime rate per hour:
Overtime rate = Hourly rate + 30% of Hourly rate
= P82.875 + (30% of P82.875) = P82.875 x 1.30 = P107.7375 per hour

Merry Christmas 2012
Here are ten ways for nurses to get over the holiday working blues
1. Be glad you have a stable nursing job. In these trying economic times, you have an income to help pay for basics and also gifts for your loved ones.
2. Give sacrificially to someone less fortunate than you. Work with your children on some small gifts you can take to your patients on Christmas Day. You will be teaching them to give and including them in the blessing that you have of helping others.
3. Plan the pot luck for those working the holiday. Getting festive with your coworkers can be a blast and will remind you that you’re not alone.
4. Shop for the perfect set of Christmas earrings, hat or blinking pin to wear to work. You can be excited to “show it off” and cheer everyone up on the holiday.
5. Set aside special family time around Christmas. If you know you are working Christmas, you may need to consider minimizing time at grandma's house if this is not relaxing for your family. They need special time. As long as you make your time with them intimate and special, they won’t mind that it is the day before or the day after.
6. Get creative and have a surprise gift delivered to your loved ones while you work. They will know that you love them and that you were thinking about them during your nursing shift.
7. Do something special for the group that is working. If you are a manager, leave small gifts or cards with the employee’s names on them telling how much you appreciate them being there on the holiday.
8. Remember it’s just a few hours; it’s not a lifetime. Maybe it means that you were able to spend time with your family at Thanksgiving or on New Years while other nurses worked.
9. Control your feelings by controlling your thoughts. If you are obsessing about how angry or sad you are, you will be angry and sad. Instead, tell yourself working the holiday is an opportunity to show the true spirit of Christmas to your coworkers, family and patients. If you have a positive attitude, happy feelings will follow.
10. Be proud that you work holidays – you care when no one else does. Take this time to rejuvenate yourself with love and kindness for your fellow man. You are a nurse. Be a great one.
Happy Holidays! Christmas is a time for giving and the best gift you could give to humanity is your nursing career. Have a great holiday shift.

The True Sentiments of the Filipino Nurses here in the Philippines
It is a sad reality for us NURSES that we need to suffer first for a couple of months or even years working as volunteers or trainees before we can actually work as staff nurses. We are already licensed but we are not being compensated, we are exploited! We did not study nursing for free, we even had the most expensive tuition fee but look at us now, we are still asking money from our parents and we can’t even buy our own needs.
