CGFNS Certification Program for Registered Nurses

The CGFNS International Certification Program (CP) is designed specifically for registered nurses educated outside the United States who are eligible to practice their profession in the United States. To be able to pass this examination, you must have completed classroom instruction and clinical practice in adult health nursing, maternal/infant nursing, care of children, psychiatric/mental health nursing. You must be a registered nurse of your country and hold license as a register nurse.

NCLEX Scoring System

There is no time limit for each individual question. You will have a maximum of 6 hours to complete the NCLEX-RN exam, which includes a tutorial in the beginning.

Everyone answers a minimum of 75 questions to a maximum of 265 questions on the NCLEX exam. Regardless of how many you answer, you will be given 15 experimental questions that do not count for or against you.

How to Contact Pearsonvue to request ATT

If you want to contact Pearsonvue Customer Service to request a copy of NCLEX ATT, you can do it online.

1. Go to http://pearsonvue.com/contact/asiapac/customerservice/ Fill up the form, especially the required fields (with *).
2. Be sure to put NCLEX in the Testing Program field. It will be easier for Pearsonvue to know what exam are you concerned about.
3. In the Comments/Questions text box, you can follow this sample message to Pearsonvue:

I’ve sampled California board of nursing above for it’s the usual case. You can state your own situation/reason for requesting a copy. Allow 3-4 business days to receive a response from Pearsonvue in your email.

Have you heard of PearsonVue Trick (PVT)?

For lots of NCLEX takers, waiting for the NCLEX result is the most stressful part. That’s why some candidates would pay $7.95 at Pearsonvue just to view the Quick Results, but not all state Board of Nursing participate in that service.

Pearsonvue Trick hints you about your NCLEX result, sometimes hours after taking the exam. Yes, it’s quicker than Quick Results, and most of all free. Even candidates whose state Board of Nursing does not participate in QR can utilize this method of checking NCLEX result.

Alright, I’ll give you the steps on how to do Pearsonvue trick for checking the NCLEX results fast with images.

1. Type address http://pearsonvue.com/nclex/activity/. Login your Username and Password, as shown below:

2. Click ‘Register’ button.

3. Choose your Exam Type. Below NCLEX-RN was selected. Click ‘Next’.

4. Select Country of Test Center Location. Click ‘Next’.

In the next items, you may answer only the required field (with *).

5. Click ‘Yes’ in first Question, then select your Country in drop down menu Wait for page to refresh.

6. Leave the City and Program Code fields blank if you’re in foreign country, as shown below. Click ‘Search’ and again, wait for the page to refresh.

7. Then select the Country(or your nursing programwith Program Code) that appeared after refresh, as shown below. Click ‘Next’.

8. Select your Board of Nursing, as shown. Take a deep breath, the next screen will hint you of your result. If you’re ready, click ‘Next’.

Here are the possible outcomes:

• If you passed the NCLEX, there’s a pop-up that says, Our records indicate that you have recently scheduled this exam. Please contact your Member Board for further assistance. Another registration cannot be made at this time.’

• If you failed, the registration will continue and ask you for Payment, credit card details.

• If you get a pop up that says ‘The candidate currently has test results that are on hold. A new registration cannot be created at this time.’, it has nothing to do with passing or failing; it means you will possibly have to wait a few more days and do the Pearsonvue trick again.

How to apply online for CGFNS CES Report in any state

The CGFNS International Credentials Evaluation Service (CES) analyzes the credentials of multiple types and levels of health care professionals who are educated outside of the United States and who wish to pursue licensure (by NCLEX) or academic admission in the United States.
There are two methods of CES Application, online and using downloadable paper forms. The online CES Application is cheaper, for CGFNS charges extra $75 for any paper application of their services. Also, please take note that there are two types of CES report: Full and Healthcare Profession and Science Report. I suggest that you contact your state board of nursing (or read instructions) and ask what type report they require.

New CES Reports

CGFNS Credentials Evaluation Services (CES) announced the creation of two new CES reports designed to address specific needs, starting on February 1, 2011.

These two new reports was named CES Professional Report and CES Academic Report, replacing CES Healthcare Profession and Science Report and CES Full Report, respectively.
The new CES Professional Report was designed to meet the specific requirements of individual state boards of nursing to provide a more comprehensive credentials evaluation of applicants educated outside the United States. This would also be helpful to employers, immigration attorneys and recruiters.
It also allows state boards of nursing to integrate their own requirements template, which includes a statement of comparability of an applicant’s education when measured against U.S. standards.
On the other hand, the new CES Academic Report was aimed to meet the needs of applicants pursuing further education in U.S. institutions of higher learning.
“We are genuinely grateful for the input that U.S. state boards of nursing have provided regarding their current and future assessment needs,” said Barbara L. Nichols, CEO, CGFNS International. “Technology enables us to continue to provide customized reports to meet the specific needs of recipient boards while keeping the cost affordable to the applicants.”
CES Academic and Professional Reports Application will only be accepted thru online application starting February 1, 2011. Also from that date on, CES applications for the discontinued Full Course-by-Course and Healthcare & Science reports will no longer be accepted. CES Professional Report costs $335 while CES Academic Report is $385.

New NCLEX-RN Test Plan - Effective April 2010

The NCLEX-RN Test Plan provides a concise summary of the content and scope of the licensing examination. It serves as a guide for examination development as well as candidate preparation. Each NCLEX-RN examination is based on the test plan.

The detailed test plan serves a variety of purposes. It is used to guide candidates preparing for the examination, to direct item writers in the development of items and to facilitate the classification of examination items. Two versions of the detailed test plan have been created: Item Writer/Item Reviewer/Nurse Educator version and Candidate version.

The Candidate version offers a more thorough and comprehensive listing of content for each client needs category and subcategory outlined in the test plan. Sample items are provided at the end of each category, which are specific to the client needs category being reviewed in that section.

The Item Writer/Item Reviewer/Nurse Educator version of the detailed test plan provides the same comprehensive listing of content and sample items for each client needs category and subcategory outlined in the test plan. In addition, the Item Writer/Item Reviewer/Nurse Educator version also provides an item writing tutorial with sample case scenarios to provide nurse educators with hands-on experience in writing NCLEX style test questions.

How to Register for the NCLEX-RN exam in New Jersey

The NCLEX-RN exam is given by the National State Council Boards of Nursing NSCBN in the United States. In order to be a licensed registered nurse in the state of New Jersey, you have to register for and take this exam. You also have to pass it before you can start working as a registered nurse.

Instructions

1. Send your credentials.
   
   To sit for the NCLEX-RN exam, you have to show the NSCBN that you have successfully graduated from nursing school. Go to your schools nursing department and ask them to send your transcripts to the New Jersey State Board of Nursing.
   
   
2. Get the application packet.
   
   Go to the New Jersey Consumer affairs website and download the application packet for licensing as a registered nurse in the sate of New Jersey. You will find a link to the website in the resources section.
 

1. Register with the testing service
   
   Go to the Pearson Vue website and register with them to sit for the NCLEX exam. Pearson Vue is the company that the NSCBN uses to administer the NCLEX exam.
   
   
2. Authorization to Test
   
   You will receive a letter about being eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam called an Authorization to Test from the New Jersey State Board of Nursing. Once you get it, visit the pearson vue website to schedule a date for your NCLEX-RN exam. You can make the scheduling online on their website or call them and schedule over the phone.You will find the phone number on their website which you will find in the resource section of this article.
   
   
3. Background Check
   
   To work as a registered nurse in New Jersey, you need to go through a background check. You will receive mail from the sate board of Nursing instructing you on where to go to begin your background check process. You dont have to do this before you take the NCLEX exam but you have to finish it before you can work as a registered nurse if you pass the NCLEX-RN exam.

Applicants who have completed LPN or RN education outside of the US must have their education credentials verified by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). Such applicants should contact CGFNS at www.cgfns.org for the application and instructions to complete the CGFNS Credential Verification Service for New York State. Please note that this verification process is not the same as CGFNS’ Certification Program (which is required for registered nurse applicants applying for limited permits). The CGFNS Credentials Verification Service for New York State licensure applicants is a process for verifying the authenticity of education credentials. The CGFNS Credentials Verification Service for New York State does not indicate approval by the New York State Education Department of the content of education. After education credentials are verified by CGFNS, they are then forwarded to and evaluated by the New York State Education Department.
You will be advised in writing of the results of the New York State Education Department’s evaluation of your education. In addition, the licensing examination administrator will be notified if you are eligible for the examination.

Arkansas NCLEX Application: How to apply

If you’re a Registered Nurse in the Philippines and wants to be licensed as in Arkansas, you have to submit NCLEX application following these steps:

Arkansas NCLEX Application

1. Arkansas NCLEX Application and fee.

• You can download the Arkansas NCLEX Application forms and instructions from Arkansas Board of Nursing website, or you can request the whole packet, including the fingerprint card thru email. Application form packet is 9 pages, and the Examination Application is on page 3 and 4. Completed application should be notarized, as stated in page 4.
• Attach application fee of $125 in money order, cashiers check, bank drafts, or if you’re paying thru credit card, complete the credit card information box on page 4. Note: There’s an additional fee for credit card processing, $4.75.

2. Fingerprint card, Criminal Background Check form and fee.

• If you downloaded the Application form from Arkansas website, you can request fingerprint card thru their online form or by emailing cthomas@arsbn.org.
• Have your fingerprints done at NBI office or any local police who’s willing to assist. Additional instructions on how to fill up the fingerprint card is on page 8 of the application.
• Complete the Criminal Background Check form, page 9,  by answering every field. If you don’t have SSN, contact Arkansas for further instructions. Have the form notarized before submitting.
• Submit the completed Fingerprint card, notarized Criminal Background Check form and fee of $41.25 in Cashier’s check or money order payable to ASBN.

3. Print and complete the Verification of Licensure form, page 6. Fill up the Part 1 and have the licensure agency (PRC) complete the Part II. The PRC will send the form directly to Arkansas, as directed.
4. Print and complete the Nursing Education Evaluation form, page 7. Fill up the upper part and bring it to your school of nursing (Registrar/Nursing Program Director) for completion. The school will then enclose your Transcript of Records and RLE summary together with this form in a school envelope, stamped and sealed, and then send it to Arkansas Board of Nursing. If the school return it to you, make sure that you send this separate from your application; make it appear that the school sent it by mailing it from the same city where the school is located.
5. Register for NCLEX-RN exam at Pearsonvue($200). After the Board has received all the required documents and you have met all of the Board’s requirements for licensure you will be deemed eligible to test. You can now register for NCLEX exam at Pearsonvue.com/nclex. You can check my Pearsonvue Registration Steps post on how to do it. Note: Once registered, your ATT will be issued and you have to schedule AND take the NCLEX exam within 90 days.
5. Schedule the NCLEX exam. You can check available slots by logging in to your Pearsonvue account(my post about it). If you will take it in Pearsonvue Testing Centers outside US, you can only do it by phone and there’s a fee of $150. Check my post about NCLEX Scheduling thru phone here.
6. Take the NCLEX exam. Bring your ATT and passport to Pearsonvue testing center on your scheduled date of exam.
The time frame to be deemed eligible to test for the nurse who has their education evaluation and verification of licensure completed by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing is estimated to be 3 to 6 months. NCLEX Application: Saipan Board of Nursing

Saipan Board of Nursing or Commonwealth Board of Nurse Examiners accepts NCLEX application with minimal requirements. You can apply and take the NCLEX Test without local (PRC) license, fingerprinting, or CES. Recently, they issue approval of eligibility as early as 1 month.

Here’s the checklist of requirements for Saipan NCLEX Application:

• Application for examination must be notarized and accompanied by two (2) 2″x2″ size signed photo’s.
• An official of true copy of birth certificate.
• RLE or Related Learning Experience form must accompany the Nursing School Program or College transcript.  It must have the school’s seal or the stamp for authentication.  Both forms must be notarized.
• An official High school transcript must be submitted and notarized.  Must bear the school’s seal or the authentication stamp.
• Fee.  The fee to take the NCLEX-RN is $110.00 and should be made payable to “CNMI TREASURER”.  Only Cashier’s check drawn from a US bank, US postal Money Order or Cash are the only acceptable form of payment. They don’t accept personal checks or drafts from Philippine banks.

Processing of your Saipan NCLEX Application could take 1-2 months or even longer depending on the volume of applicants. Saipan will then send you letter of approval/eligibility if you are approved to take the NCLEX. You can then register at Pearsonvue for $200 for the issuance of NCLEX ATT. Then you can schedule and take the NCLEX at any Pearsonvue testing center around the world

How to extend expiration of California NCLEX

UPDATE Since April 26, 2010: California now requires SSN on NCLEX Application, Renewal, Retake, so they might not extend NCLEX expiration without it. Read the official memo about it here.
If you’re reading a lot about NCLEX Application and US licensure, you might be now aware that California Board of Registered Nursing is one of the state boards that require Social Security Number (SSN, US) for a nurse to be licensed there, even after passing the NCLEX. They will just send you a pass-letter stating that you have to supply the said requirement in 3 years, or else your file will be destroyed.
Some California NCLEX passers endorse their result to other state boards, like Vermont, to be licensed. But that requires another processing and set of fees. So instead of endorsing, you can request extension of the 3-year period given by California to supply SSN. You can do that by emailing CA BRN 4-6 months before the end of 3 years. Here’s a  sample letter of request for extension:

NCSBN raises NCLEX passing standard

CHICAGO – The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN) voted on Dec. 10, 2009, to raise the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN Examination (the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses). The new passing standard is -0.16 logits on the NCLEX-RN logistic scale, 0.05 logits higher than the previous standard of -0.21. The new passing standard will take effect on April 1, 2010, in conjunction with the 2010 NCLEX-RN Test Plan.
After consideration of all available information, the NCSBN Board of Directors determined that safe and effective entry-level RN practice requires a greater level of knowledge, skills, and abilities than was required in 2007, when NCSBN implemented the current standard. The passing standard was increased in response to changes in U.S. health care delivery and nursing practice that have resulted in the greater acuity of clients seen by entry-level RNs.
The Board of Directors used multiple sources of information to guide its evaluation and discussion regarding the change in passing standard. As part of this process, NCSBN convened an expert panel of nine nurses to perform a criterion-referenced standard setting procedure. The panel’s findings supported the creation of a higher passing standard. NCSBN also considered the results of national surveys of nursing professionals including nursing educators, directors of nursing in acute care settings and administrators of long-term care facilities.
In accordance with a motion adopted by the 1989 NCSBN Delegate Assembly, the NCSBN Board of Directors evaluates the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN examination every three years to protect the public by ensuring minimal competence for entry-level RNs. NCSBN coordinates the passing standard analysis with the three-year cycle of test plan evaluation.  This three-year cycle was developed to keep the test plan and passing standard current. NCLEX Application: Nevada State Board of Nursing

If you’re a foreign nurse and wishes to be licensed as a Registered Nurse in Nevada, you have to submit NCLEX application following these steps:
1. Process CES Application – Healthcare Profession and Science Report by CGFNS ($335). CES is the evaluation of nursing education and license for internationally educated nurses. This is a requirement in NCLEX application in Nevada and in most states. 
2. Submit a completed and signed Nevada NCLEX application form, including the applicable license and fingerprinting fees (money order, cashier’s or personal check, or MasterCard™, Visa™, Discover™ or American Express™ debit or credit card) made payable to the Nevada State Board of Nursing. Fees are not refundable. You can download Nevada NCLEX Application Form here or you can request Nevada NCLEX Application together with 2 fingerprint cards by mail.
3. Submit 2 Fingerprint cards. All applicants must submit 2 fingerprint cards(FD-258) provided by Nevada State Board of Nursing, together with Fingerprint Submission form(included in the application form) and a payment of $51.25. You may pay by credit or debit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express), personal or cashier’s check, or money order, payable to the Nevada State Board of Nursing. (U.S. Funds only.). If youdownload an NCLEX application from the Nevada Board’s website, fingerprint cards will be mailed to you upon receipt of your NCLEX application in the Board office.  If you request an application by mail, fingerprint cards will be included in that packet. 4. Register for NCLEX-RN exam at Pearsonvue($200). If you’re CES report has been issued by CGFNS and all of the requirements above was received by Nevada State Board, you can now register for NCLEX exam at Pearsonvue.com/nclex. Additional Nevada NCLEX Application Notes:

• Nevada State Board of Nursing requires Social Security Number (SSN). Nevada NCLEX Applications will be accepted for processing without a U.S. SSN but a permanent license will not be issued without an SSN.
• Your NCLEX application for licensure is valid for one year from the date received by the Board, so be sure to complete the application within that period. It is your responsibility to follow up with the Board to determine the ongoing status of your NCLEX application.
• NCLEX Results: The Nevada Board will mail test results to your address of record. You should receive the written results within three to four weeks after the examination. The Board will not give you the results over the telephone.
• The Board no longer issues hard card licenses/certificates. You can check your license online.
